1. COURSE PURPOSE
This course trains Medien personnel to understand, communicate and operationally support the pairing of Medien MaxTrack with CPAP or APAP therapy.
The course moves beyond reviewing whether the CPAP machine was used and introduces a second clinical-review question:
Did the patient remain adequately oxygenated while using CPAP?
CPAP reports mainly provide information about:
- Usage and adherence
- Delivered pressure
- Mask leakage
- Device-recorded residual AHI
- Flow-related respiratory events
These parameters are essential, but they do not independently confirm the patient’s overnight oxygen response.
Research has shown that some patients may have a PAP-device AHI below five events per hour while concurrent oximetry remains abnormal. Automated CPAP event detection may also miss some residual respiratory abnormalities.
Medien MaxTrack adds multi-night oxygen-saturation and pulse-rate monitoring to support a more complete review of the patient’s physiological response.
2. CLINICAL POSITIONING PRINCIPLE
The clinically responsible position is:
Medien MaxTrack pairing is not mandatory for every CPAP user. It is highly valuable and may be clinically indicated for symptomatic or higher-risk patients whose oxygen response cannot be confirmed from CPAP data alone.
The solution must not be positioned as:
- A replacement for a CPAP report
- A replacement for polysomnography
- A diagnostic test for overlap syndrome
- A standalone method of diagnosing hypoventilation
- A tool for independently prescribing oxygen
- A tool for changing CPAP, BiPAP or ventilator settings without clinician review
The correct positioning is:
CPAP data shows how the machine is operating, while Medien MaxTrack helps clinicians review how the patient is responding physiologically.
3. LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing this course, the learner should be able to:
- Explain the difference between CPAP-machine data and oxygen-outcome data.
- Identify patients who may benefit from concurrent oxygen monitoring.
- Explain why a low residual AHI does not always confirm normal oxygenation.
- Describe the relevance of Medien MaxTrack for COPD–OSA overlap syndrome and other high-risk conditions.
- Explain ODI, mean SpO₂, minimum SpO₂, time below an oxygen threshold and hypoxic burden.
- Support a multi-night Medien MaxTrack–CPAP monitoring workflow.
- Review CPAP and Medien MaxTrack results as complementary information.
- Recognise patterns requiring clinical escalation.
- Communicate the solution without making unsupported diagnostic or treatment claims.
- Apply Medien’s approved clinical-validation and regulatory statements.
